Synopsis
## Ghost in the Shell
**Ghost in the Shell** (攻殻機動隊, *Kōkaku Kidōtai*) is a 1995 cyberpunk science fiction film directed by Mamoru Oshii, produced by Production I.G and Bandai Visual. Adapted from Masamune Shirow's manga, the film is one of the most philosophically rich and visually stunning anime ever made. The Wachowskis cited it as a primary influence on *The Matrix*, and its meditation on consciousness, identity, and the boundaries of humanity has only grown more relevant with time.
In a mid-21st century future where cybernetic technology has blurred the line between human and machine, Major Motoko Kusanagi is a full-body cybernetic operative for Section 9, Japan's elite counter-cyberterrorism unit. She is assigned to track the Puppet Master, a supremely gifted hacker who can "ghost-hack" — infiltrating and controlling human cybernetic minds as if they were computers. As the Major closes in on her quarry, she is increasingly consumed by existential questions: what makes her consciousness "real" if her body is entirely artificial? Does she have a soul — a "ghost" — at all? The Puppet Master's true nature, when revealed, upends everything she thought she understood about identity, individuality, and the nature of life itself. A film of immense intelligence and haunting beauty.
