Synopsis
## Kakegurui
*Kakegurui* (*Kakegurui: Compulsive Gambler*) is a psychological thriller from MAPPA that turns the school anime formula completely on its head. At Hyakkaou Private Academy, social rank isn't determined by grades or sports — it's decided entirely by gambling. The series ran for two seasons (2017 and 2019) and is fully available on Netflix worldwide.
Hyakkaou Private Academy is no ordinary elite school. Its students come from Japan's most powerful families, and by day they study normal curricula — but after hours, the school transforms into a high-stakes gambling den where fortunes and social status are won and lost at card tables. The student council runs the hierarchy with an iron fist: winners become royalty, losers become "house pets" subjected to humiliation and servitude. Into this rigged system arrives Yumeko Jabami, a beautiful transfer student who seems perfectly ordinary at first. She isn't. Yumeko is a compulsive gambler in the purest sense: she doesn't care about winning, losing, or social standing — she gambles for the overwhelming, ecstatic rush of pure risk. Her unpredictable, joy-driven approach to games that everyone else treats as zero-sum war causes the entire academy hierarchy to fracture. Season 1 introduces the main cast and Yumeko's rise through the ranks; Season 2 (*Kakegurui ××*) raises the stakes with a full-school election gamble. The series is known for its exaggerated facial expressions, operatic tension, and a female protagonist whose power comes from genuine, unhinged enthusiasm rather than cold calculation.
