Synopsis
## Planetes
**Planetes** is a 26-episode hard science fiction anime produced by Sunrise and directed by Goro Taniguchi, based on the manga by Makoto Yukimura. First broadcast in 2003, it remains one of the most scientifically rigorous and emotionally honest sci-fi anime ever produced — a rare work that grounds its human drama in the actual physics and geopolitics of near-future space exploration.
The year is 2075. Commercial spaceflight is routine, and humanity has established permanent presence in Earth's orbit and on the Moon. But with space travel comes a growing crisis: orbital debris — the detritus of decades of launches — now poses a lethal threat to spacecraft and stations. Hachimaki Hoshino and Ai Tanabe work for the Space Defense Section, a department tasked with collecting this debris before it causes disasters. Dismissed as "the garbage collectors of space," they do unglamorous but essential work. Hachimaki dreams of one day owning his own spacecraft and joining the first human mission to Jupiter; Tanabe is an idealistic newcomer who believes in love as the driving force of human achievement. The series follows their crew through the personal, political, and physical challenges of their work — depicting spaceflight's zero-gravity environments, vacuum exposure, and orbital mechanics with striking accuracy. Planetes is ultimately a story about ambition, purpose, and whether the dreams we carry are worth the costs they demand.
