## PLUTO *PLUTO* is the anime adaptation of Naoki Urasawa's celebrated manga of the same name — itself a radical reimagining of Osamu Tezuka's *Astro Boy*. Released on Netflix in October 2023 as 8 feature-length episodes, it is one of the most intellectually and emotionally ambitious anime produced in years. In a near-future world where robots and humans coexist, a series of murders has begun targeting the seven most powerful robots on Earth. Europol robot detective Gesicht is assigned to the case — and quickly discovers he is also on the killer's list. Each victim, human and robot alike, was left with a pair of horns planted beside their bodies. As Gesicht investigates, he confronts questions of war, hatred, and manufactured emotion, uncovering the legacy of a devastating conflict in the Middle East that nobody wants to remember. *PLUTO* uses the bones of a pulp mystery to ask what it truly means to feel hatred, and whether the capacity for war is uniquely human — or something that can be programmed.
