Synopsis
## Ranma ½
*Ranma ½* is one of the most beloved and influential romantic comedy anime of all time — a cornerstone of 90s shonen that introduced millions of fans worldwide to Rumiko Takahashi's unique blend of martial arts action, slapstick comedy, and will-they-won't-they romance. Produced by Studio Deen and airing from 1989 to 1992, the series ran for 161 episodes and remains a touchstone of the genre. Available on Crunchyroll.
Ranma Saotome is a teenage martial arts prodigy who, while training in China with his father Genma, falls into a cursed spring at Jusenkyo. The curse transforms him into a girl whenever he's splashed with cold water, reverting to male form only with hot water — a condition that his father, now cursed to become a giant panda, somehow neglected to mention. The two are sent to live with the Tendo family in Tokyo, where family patriarch Soun reveals that Ranma is engaged to one of his three daughters as part of a pact with Genma to unite their martial arts schools. Youngest daughter Akane, the most skilled fighter among the sisters, is chosen as Ranma's fiancée — much to the fury of both. What follows is 161 episodes of brilliant romantic chaos: rivals emerging to challenge Ranma, secondary love interests complicating matters for both leads, and a rotating cast of beautifully absurd characters including the over-the-hill pervert Happosai, the Chinese Amazon Shampoo, the bandanna-wielding Ryoga, and the hyper-focused Mousse. Takahashi's genius is in the slow burn — Ranma and Akane are clearly in love but refuse to admit it, and the comedy of their mutual denial never gets old. The martial arts sequences are creative and inventive, often turning everyday objects or activities into competitive disciplines. A true classic.
