Synopsis

## Revolutionary Girl Utena **Revolutionary Girl Utena** (*Shoujo Kakumei Utena*) is a 39-episode anime series produced by J.C.Staff and directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara, based on the manga by Chiho Saito. First broadcast in 1997, it stands as one of the most thematically ambitious and symbolically dense anime ever created — a work that simultaneously honors and dismantles the conventions of the shoujo genre. Utena Tenjou is a teenage girl who, inspired by a prince who comforted her after her parents' deaths, has resolved to become a prince herself. She enrolls at Ohtori Academy and is pulled into a series of ritualized duels. The victor wins possession of the "Rose Bride," Anthy Himemiya — a passive, mysterious girl who supposedly holds the power to "revolutionize the world." As Utena fights her way through increasingly strange opponents, she begins to understand the true nature of the academy, the Rose Bride, and the power she has been unwittingly pursuing. Director Ikuhara uses recurring theatrical motifs, surrealist imagery — including an absurdist prince's castle that descends from the sky during duels — and layered metaphors about gender, power, and liberation to construct a viewing experience that demands active interpretation. Revolutionary Girl Utena remains one of the most intellectually daring anime of the 1990s and a foundational text of queer anime criticism.
