Synopsis

## Serial Experiments Lain **Serial Experiments Lain** is a 13-episode psychological cyberpunk anime produced by Triangle Staff and directed by Ryutaro Nakamura, with character designs by Yoshitoshi ABe and a screenplay by Chiaki J. Konaka. First broadcast in 1998, it remains one of the most intellectually ambitious and visually unsettling anime ever made — a work that prefigured widespread anxieties about the internet, digital identity, and networked existence that would only fully materialize decades later. Lain Iwakura is a quiet, socially withdrawn 14-year-old girl living an ordinary life in suburban Japan. Everything changes when she receives an email from her classmate Chisa Yomoda — who died by suicide a week earlier. Chisa claims she has not truly died, only abandoned her physical body to live fully within "the Wired," a vast networked virtual reality analogous to the internet. Drawn to investigate, Lain begins spending increasing amounts of time connected, and discovers a presence in the Wired that shares her name but behaves in ways she cannot explain. As the boundary between the physical world and the Wired dissolves, Lain finds her own identity fragmenting — unsure what is real, what she truly is, and whether her sense of self has any grounding at all. The series' haunting, sparse atmosphere and layered philosophical storytelling reward close, repeated viewing.
