## Summer Wars **Summer Wars** (サマーウォーズ) is a 2009 animated science fiction comedy-drama film directed by Mamoru Hosoda, produced by Madhouse. Conceived as a spiritual successor to the director's earlier TV film *One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island* and sharing DNA with *Digimon: The Movie*, Summer Wars is one of the most purely enjoyable anime films ever made — a boisterous celebration of family, community, and human ingenuity in the face of technological catastrophe. Kenji Koiso is a shy, brilliant high school math student who is recruited by his classmate and crush Natsuki to travel to her family's ancestral estate in rural Nagano and pretend to be her boyfriend for her great-grandmother's 90th birthday. The family — the enormous, boisterous Jinnouchi clan — is immediately overwhelming. Then a crisis erupts: a mysterious math problem arrives in Kenji's inbox, and his accidental solution to it gives a rogue AI called Love Machine the master code to OZ, the world's dominant virtual social network used by billions for everything from banking to nuclear plant management. As Love Machine goes on a destructive rampage and the world's infrastructure begins to collapse, the entire Jinnouchi family rallies together — using every skill and resource they have — to fight back in both the virtual and physical worlds.
