Synopsis
## The Ancient Magus' Bride
**The Ancient Magus' Bride** (魔法使いの嫁, *Mahō Tsukai no Yome*) is a 2017 anime television series produced by Wit Studio, adapted from Kore Yamazaki's manga. One of the most visually sumptuous anime of its era, the series creates a lush, immersive world of magic, folklore, and the English countryside that is unlike anything else in the medium — drawing on Celtic mythology, European fairy tale traditions, and Japanese magical thinking to build something genuinely singular.
Chise Hatori is a 15-year-old Japanese orphan who has seen supernatural creatures all her life — a gift that has made her unwanted and feared. Having given up on herself, she willingly sells herself at an underground auction. The buyer is Elias Ainsworth, a towering, ancient being with a skull for a head who is also one of England's most powerful mages. He purchases Chise to be his apprentice — and announces that she will also, eventually, be his bride. Brought to his cottage in the English countryside, Chise encounters a world of faeries, dragons, Church Grimms, and ancient magic as she learns to use her abilities as a "Sleigh Beggy," a person with extraordinary magical affinity. The series explores a complex, slowly deepening relationship between two lonely, damaged beings learning to need each other, set against stunning backgrounds of rural England.
