## The Boy and the Heron *The Boy and the Heron* (*Kimitachi wa Dou Ikiru ka*) is Hayao Miyazaki's return from retirement — a deeply personal, surreal masterpiece that won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2024. Eleven-year-old Mahito Maki loses his mother in a wartime fire and moves with his father and new stepmother to the countryside. There, a strange grey heron begins speaking to him, leading him to an ancient tower and into a fantastical spirit world where his deceased mother exists as a younger woman. The film is deliberately enigmatic — a meditation on grief, artistic legacy, the act of world-building, and how we choose to live. Miyazaki poured his own autobiography into this film, making it his most personal work.
