Synopsis

## The Tale of the Princess Kaguya *The Tale of the Princess Kaguya* is Isao Takahata's final film and one of the most visually unique achievements in animation history — a heartbreaking adaptation of Japan's oldest written narrative, painted in an expressive, sketch-like style that seems to breathe on screen. A bamboo cutter named Sanuki no Miyatsuko discovers a tiny glowing girl inside a bamboo stalk and raises her as his daughter alongside his wife. The girl grows at supernatural speed and her beauty attracts suitors from across the land. When gold and silk also begin appearing in the bamboo, Sanuki becomes convinced his daughter is a celestial princess meant for a life of aristocratic splendor in the capital. But Kaguya — as she comes to be called — longs for the hills, the seasons, and the simple life of her childhood. Forced into the court world of nobles and formal attire, she grows increasingly despondent, haunted by a secret: she was sent to Earth as a punishment and must eventually return to the Moon, erasing all memory of her earthly life. The film transforms a thousand-year-old fairy tale into a meditation on freedom, longing, and the tragedy of a life shaped by others' expectations rather than one's own desires.
