Synopsis
## Tokyo Ghoul
**Tokyo Ghoul** (東京喰種トーキョーグール, *Tōkyō Gūru*) is a 2014 anime television series produced by Studio Pierrot, adapted from Sui Ishida's manga. The first season is widely considered the strongest adaptation of the source material — a taut, viscerally compelling dark fantasy that tackles questions of identity, belonging, and the violence societies commit against those they label as "other." The series became a global phenomenon and spawned multiple sequel seasons, though the first season remains the most celebrated.
Tokyo is secretly home to ghouls — humanoid predators that blend seamlessly into human society while feeding on human flesh. Ken Kaneki is an ordinary, bookish university student who nearly dies when his date Rize Kamishiro is revealed to be a ghoul who attacks him. In the hospital, damaged organs from Rize's own accidentally crushed body are transplanted into Ken — giving him the biology of a half-ghoul. He can no longer eat human food. He craves human flesh. And he is hunted by both the ghoul investigation bureau and ghouls who see him as an abomination. Taken in by the ghouls of a Tokyo café called Anteiku, Ken must learn to survive and to understand a community of beings forced into monstrousness by their nature, in a series that asks who the real monsters are.
