Several years have passed since the fall of King Canute's father. Thorfinn, the driven young warrior who once lived only for revenge, is now a slave on a farm in Denmark, hollowed out by guilt and trauma. He no longer fights. He barely speaks. He plants crops and endures his captivity alongside Einar, a new slave with whom he forms a cautious bond.
