Synopsis
## The Ancient Magus' Bride
*The Ancient Magus' Bride* is one of the most visually lush and emotionally layered fantasy manga in recent memory — a slow-burn story about trauma, belonging, and the strange mercy of being accepted in a world of magic.
Chise Hatori is a teenage girl with the rare gift of a "Sleigh Beggy" — an ability to attract and absorb magical energy that has made her life a nightmare of supernatural encounters and social isolation. Having sold herself at auction out of sheer hopelessness, she is purchased by Elias Ainsworth, a towering mage with a skull for a head who calls her his apprentice and, eventually, his bride. Brought to the English countryside, Chise begins to learn magic and, slowly, to want to live. Kore Yamazaki's manga draws deeply from European folklore — faeries, dragons, alchemists, wizards — and renders it all in gorgeous, detailed artwork. At its heart, however, *The Ancient Magus' Bride* is about two lonely, broken beings learning what it means to be seen and cared for. The anime adaptation by WIT Studio (2017) was critically acclaimed; the manga continues beyond the anime's events.
