## SAO Progressive Gets a Third Film β Aincrad's Story Continues
A-1 Pictures and Aniplex have officially announced a third *Sword Art Online Progressive* theatrical film, extending the acclaimed floor-by-floor retelling of the Aincrad arc that Reki Kawahara originally wrote to address the time-skip gaps in the main SAO novels.
### What Is SAO Progressive and Why It Matters
For viewers whose SAO entry point was the original 2012 series, the Aincrad arc moved fast. Kirito and Asuna's two-year imprisonment in the deadly VRMMO was compressed into a single cour that skipped from floor 1 to the climax without showing the grinding, tactical, and human reality of the floors in between.
*Progressive* is Kawahara's answer to that compression β a more grounded, slower-burn retelling that treats each floor as its own story. The film adaptations have leaned into this by significantly expanding Asuna's perspective and giving her a co-lead role that the original series underutilized.
The first two films (*Aria of a Starless Night* and *Scherzo of Deep Night*) were received well by both newcomers and longtime fans, earning particular praise for Asuna's expanded characterization and the theatrical-quality animation that A-1 Pictures brought to familiar locations from the game-world.
### What Will the Third Film Cover?
The Progressive novels have covered floors 1 through 7 across five volumes. The third film is expected to adapt content from volumes 4 and 5, which cover floors 5 and 6 and introduce character dynamics that set up major developments later in the Progressive continuity.
### Production Details
Ayako Kawasumi and Yoshitsugu Matsuoka return as Asuna and Kirito respectively. Director Ayako Kawasumi (no relation to the voice actress) handled both previous films and is confirmed to return. The theatrical release window has not been announced, but speculation based on the production cycle of the previous two films points to a late 2027 theatrical run.

The *SAO Progressive* films are available digitally via Crunchyroll and Amazon Prime Video following their theatrical runs. The Progressive light novels are available in English from Yen Press.
