Synopsis

## Nana *Nana* by Ai Yazawa is one of the most celebrated josei manga ever created — a story about two young women named Nana who share an apartment and slowly change each other's lives, set against the electric backdrop of Tokyo's indie music scene. Two women named Nana meet on a train to Tokyo and, by an improbable coincidence, end up becoming roommates. Nana Komatsu — nicknamed "Hachi" — is a hopeless romantic chasing her boyfriend to the city. Nana Osaki is a fierce, punk rock vocalist determined to make her band BLAST break into the music industry on their own terms. Their friendship is the novel's beating heart: contrasting personalities that complement each other in ways neither expected. Yazawa's writing is unusually mature for its genre — the series does not shy away from complicated relationships, infidelity, ambition, loss, and the messy reality of adult choices. The manga famously went on indefinite hiatus in 2009 due to Yazawa's serious illness, leaving the story's conclusion unwritten. As of 2026, no restart has been confirmed. *Nana* remains one of the most beloved unfinished manga in the medium, with millions of readers still waiting.
