## Dragon Ball *Dragon Ball* is the manga that defined modern shonen — Akira Toriyama's 42-volume magnum opus, spanning from a whimsical adventure comedy to the most influential battle manga series ever created, laying the template every shonen series has followed since. Dragon Ball begins as a comic adventure inspired by the Chinese classic *Journey to the West*. Goku — a small, naive boy with a monkey tail and superhuman strength — encounters Bulma, a teenage genius in search of the seven Dragon Balls, mystical orbs that summon a dragon who grants any wish. Their journey together draws them into martial arts tournaments, Red Ribbon Army battles, and encounters with increasingly powerful enemies.
