Synopsis

## Dragon Ball *Dragon Ball* is the manga that defined modern shonen — Akira Toriyama's 42-volume magnum opus, spanning from a whimsical adventure comedy to the most influential battle manga series ever created, laying the template every shonen series has followed since. Dragon Ball begins as a comic adventure inspired by the Chinese classic *Journey to the West*. Goku — a small, naive boy with a monkey tail and superhuman strength — encounters Bulma, a teenage genius in search of the seven Dragon Balls, mystical orbs that summon a dragon who grants any wish. Their journey together draws them into martial arts tournaments, Red Ribbon Army battles, and encounters with increasingly powerful enemies. Midway through, Toriyama's series transforms: the adult Goku faces first the demon king Piccolo, then extraterrestrial threats of apocalyptic scale in what the West knows as *Dragon Ball Z*. The manga encompasses both halves of this journey in its 519 chapters, depicting Goku's growth from child prodigy to Earth's greatest defender, through battles that established the visual and narrative vocabulary of fighting anime — the power levels, the transformations, the rivalry with Vegeta — that every subsequent battle series has referenced. Toriyama's death in March 2024 elevated Dragon Ball to a cultural monument.
