Synopsis

## Fruits Basket *Fruits Basket* by Natsuki Takaya is one of the defining shoujo manga of its generation — a story about healing, family trauma, and the transformative power of unconditional kindness, wrapped around a whimsical supernatural premise. Tohru Honda is an orphaned high school girl who, after her mother's death, ends up living in a tent in the forest — only to discover that the land belongs to the Sohma family. The Sohmas take her in, and Tohru soon learns their secret: thirteen members of the family are cursed by the Chinese Zodiac spirits, transforming into the corresponding animal whenever they are embraced by a person of the opposite sex. At the center of the family curse is Akito Sohma, the family's god-like head, who controls the Zodiac members through emotional abuse and manipulation. Tohru's gentle nature and determination to understand and support the Sohmas — particularly the brooding Kyo (cat) and the composed Yuki (rat) — slowly begins to unravel bonds that have held the family in suffering for generations. The manga is noted for its willingness to explore depression, abuse, and parental failure without flinching. Completed across 23 volumes; the acclaimed 2019-2021 anime adaptation (covering all three seasons and the finale) follows the manga faithfully.
