Synopsis
## Made in Abyss
*Made in Abyss* by Akihito Tsukushi is one of the most remarkable manga of its generation — a deeply unsettling, visually gorgeous dark fantasy about childhood, wonder, and the horror of an incomprehensible world. Serialized in *Gekkan Action* since 2012 and still ongoing, it inspired an acclaimed anime adaptation by Kinema Citrus (2017) and multiple sequel films and seasons that have made it an international phenomenon.
The Abyss is a massive chasm in the earth, stretching so deep that no one knows where it ends. For centuries, the city of Orth has sat at its rim, and generations of explorers called "Delvers" have descended into it, returning with ancient relics and artifacts from a civilization no one understands. The deeper you go, the more treasures you find — but also the more dangerous the "Curse of the Abyss" becomes. Ascending from the lower layers causes physical agony, hallucinations, and at the deepest levels, the loss of humanity itself. The Delvers are ranked by how far they can go and come back. The White Whistles are legends who have dived to depths no one else has survived. Riko is an orphan girl at an orphanage in Orth, training to be a Delver herself, hoping to find her mother — a White Whistle who descended years ago and never returned. When Riko discovers a robot boy in the Abyss, things she calls Reg, who has no memories, the two decide to descend together. The manga is genuinely beloved for the contrast between its cute art style and its willingness to depict genuine, horrible consequences. Tsukushi does not protect his characters from what the world does to them.
